In almost all refrigeration and air conditioning systems, there are various chemicals used in order to drain the heat from the system. For most of the twentieth century, the coolants used in these systems have been Chlorofluorocarbons, the most well known of which is freon. Freon has become so ubiquitous in its use that most individuals, when referring to Chlorofluorocarbons, simply use the brand name Freon instead. However, starting in the 1960s, the negative effects of these Chlorofluorocarbons on the environment have become well know. When released into the atmosphere, these CFCs accelerate the rate at which the Ozone in the upper atmosphere is being depleted.

The Ozone in the atmosphere plays an important role in regulating the global temperature and radiation levels. As radiation from the sun enters the atmosphere, the vast majority of it is reflected and absorbed by the gasses that pervade the upper layers. The Ozone layer serves the primary purpose of absorbing ultraviolet radiation before it reaches the Earth’s surface. Ultraviolet radiation is incredibly harmful to animal and plant life, and is most commonly known to cause skin cancer in human beings. The Ozone layer absorbs approximately ninety percent of the ultraviolet radiation before it can do any damage. This layer is being depleted at a dangerous rate however, and one of the primary causes is Chlorofluorocarbons in the atmosphere.

Today, as a result of increased awareness of these negative effects from Freon in the atmosphere, most refrigeration and air conditioning systems use a compound known as R-22 as a replacement. Unfortunately, R-22 also contributes to the depletion of the Ozone layer, albeit at a much slower rate. The Montreal Protocol, implemented more than twenty years ago, has been signed by more than one hundred and fifty different countries. It is part of a plan to phase out R-22 and other Chlorofluorocarbons from being used at all globally. Bluon Energy is at the forefront of the companies that have developed a replacement for R-22.
